I guess magical thinking is a form of idea of reference when we feel helpless and powerless. We start to connect the dots among irrelevant things, sees correlation as causation.
Nothing else to add, as I’m in agreement with you—just wanted to encourage everyone to read Bessel’s book, it’s really incredible and life changing stuff. Coincidentally, all the things he writes about—the real and measurable connection between adverse life events and bodily health, taking peoples’ mental health seriously and funding it etc. is pretty much the opposite of authoritarianism of all stripes. But that’s always been the case whenever a person is fully humanized and supported.
